Scientific Publishing addresses the issue of business models in scientific publishing and how these relate to the research process (e.g. support or inhibit this process). The researcher is taken as the starting point for the considerations to arrive at a comprehensive description of the publishing process as an integral part of the research process. The properties of different business models are tested against this description, allowing an analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of these models in supporting the research process.Examines business models in scientific publ

Virtual Research Environments examines making Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) usable by researchers working to solve "grand challenge? problems in many disciplines from social science to particle physics. It is driven by research the authors have carried out to evaluate researchers' requirements in using information services via web portals and in adapting collaborative learning tools to meet their more diverse needs, particularly in a multidisciplinary study. This is the motivation for what the authors have helped develop into the UK Virtual Research Environments (VRE)

During the past fifty years, colonial empires around the world have collapsed and vast areas that were once known as "colonies" have become known as "less developed countries" or "the third world." The idea of development-and the relationship it implies between industrialized, affluent nations and poor, emerging nations-has become the key to a new conceptual framework. Development has also become a vast industry, involving billions of dollars and a worldwide community of experts. These essays-written by scholars in many fields-examine the production, transmission, and implementation of ideas about development within historical, political, and intellectual contexts, emphasizing the changing meanings of development over the past fifty years. The concept of development has come under attack in recent years both from those who see development as the imperialism of knowledge, imposing on the world a modernity that it does not necessarily want, and those who see development efforts as a distortion of the world market. These essays look beyond the polemics and focus on the diverse, contested, and changing meanings of development among social movements, national governments, international agencies, foundations, and scholars.

Artistic research is an endeavour in which the artistic and the academic are connected. In this emerging field of research artistic practices contribute as research to what we know and understand, and academia opens its mind to forms of knowledge and understanding that are entwined with artistic practices. Henk Borgdorff also addresses how we comment on such issues, and how the things we say cause the practices involved to manifest themselves in specific ways, while also setting them into motion. In this sense, this work not only explores the phenomenon of artistic research in relation to academia, but it also engages with that relationship.

The global emergency caused by HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis requires new approaches to confront the three major killing diseases around the world that are the origin and the consequence of serious poverty. In response to this emergency, The European Union provides a comprehensive approach in a wide range of policy areas, including trade, development and research. Research on HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis focuses on collaborative research at World level, developing new therapies, diagnostic and preventive tools. The Programme is sponsoring research on the entire spectrum, from basic molecular research through to preclinical tests and proof-of-principle studies. Research efforts confront the three diseases at the global level, but also address specific European aspects. Structures that were successfully built under the FP6 (2002-2006) are reinforced and complemented in the FP7. This catalogue shows the projects currently financed by the European Commission's Seventh Research Framework Programme (FP7) since 2007 up to 2010, aiming at combating these three major killer diseases: HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis."

In this bibliography of the exact sciences in the Low Countries, Klaas Hoogendoorn gives a detailed analytical description by autopsy of all printed books published by scientists associated with the Low Countries from ca. 1470 to the Golden Age (1700). The books' locations are given, along with secondary bibliographical sources and concise biographies of the authors. Includes indexes of the editions by subject, printer/publisher and person.Along with books on subjects including mathematics, physics, military science and navigation, the second part describes all known almanacs and prognostications for the period, providing the most complete survey yet available. It is a thoroughly revised and expanded update of D. Bierens de Haan’s Bibliographie néerlandaise historique-scientifique … (Rome, 1883) up to about 1700.
